This came from r/oldrecipes, and apparently was an award-winning baker’s secret recipe. The “murder” part came to be through discussions that the baker’s neighbor was murdered, though I’ve had a hard time verifying. Makes for a cool name though!
These are very delicuos and have a soft texture, but only if you do them perfectly. Bake too little, and you get an overly gooey center that easilly falls apart. Too much and they taste just bad. Be strict with the time and adjust based on the results you get. When you find the ideal time though, follow it like the law.

- Difficulty
Ingredients
- 1.5 cup sugar
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 0.5 cup molasses
- 1 egg
- 3.5 cup flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 2.5 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 0.5 tsp nutmeg
- 0.5 tsp allspice
- 0.25 cup whole milk
Steps
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Combine sugar, butter, molasses and egg with an electric beater.
- In a separate bowl, sift together dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice).
- Mix in parts of the dry ingredients and milk into the first bowl, in about thirds.
- Scoop batter by 1 tablespoon (slightly overflowing) onto cookie sheet lined with parchment paper
- Bake for 10-12 minutes.
- Remove from the oven. Let sit for 2 minutes. DO NOT let them sit longer
- Using heat-protected gloves, slide the cookies off of the cookie sheet by pinching one side of the porchment paper and tipping the sheet up and out. Cookies will be very soft and brittle; handle with care.
- Let sit another 10 minutes before serving.
Tips
- Full baking gloves (like Ove Gloves) are highly recommended for handling the cookie sheet and removing the cookies.
- It is very easy to overcook the bottoms of the cookies. Be strict on baking time; 12 minutes is often the absolute max. That's also why it's importart to slide the cookies off of the baking sheet soon after they're removed; keeping them on the hot cookie sheet can continue to cook them more than desired.
